But now, because the hardware was on the platform, there was no place to mount the spare tire. So I bought a fixed spare tire mount for the square bumper on the back of the trailer.
The trouble was, using this unit, the spare hung about as far from the back trailer that the platform did when it was down. I wanted to tuck the spare in as close as I could to the back of the trailer.
The answer was to mount the carrier on the inside of the bumper rather than the outside. But this required the addition of a couple pieces of angle iron not only for the U-bolts but also to get the spare up higher to clear the bumper. I used steel because I had it on hand, but aluminum would have been a better choice.
In each angle, you'll need to drill two holes for the u-bolt and two holes for mounting to the new carrier. Also two holes through the new carrier. |
It's gonna need some paint, but it's exactly what I had in mind.
